Stuck between Wednesday and Friday on Thursday Island

Nestled in amongst several other islands to the northeast of Cape York Peninsula, including Friday to the west and Wednesday to the northeast, it's easy to overlook the weather of Thursday Island.

Thursday is slightly smaller than its two weekday counterparts, but was made famous for the lucrative Pearl industry around its waters, and is currently the administrative capital of the Torres Strait Island Region.

Like most locations in the tropics, there is usually little variation between daytime and nighttime temperatures, around five to 10 degrees. Temperatures for the next week are a perfect example of this, reaching the low thirties most days and dropping to the mid-to-upper twenties by night.

So far this month, daytime temperatures have consistently peaked above 31 degrees. The previous month was also the warmest April in at least 18 years, with a mean maximum temperature of 31.5 degrees.

Looking at rainfall for the next couple of days, the island is set to receive around 5mm of rain as a weak low pressure trough lingers across the region.

This may seem quite low for the tropics, but the month of May usually marks the wind-down of significant rainfall until December, with the mean rainfall for the month around 53mm.

Today is set to be a typical Thursday for the Pearl of the Torres Strait, with the odd shower and possible thunderstorm in the afternoon, reaching 32 degrees under partly cloudy conditions.
