Summer contrast of heat as Perth set to reach 39 degrees

Anthony Duke, Tuesday January 27, 2015 - 13:06 AEDT

Perth is forecast to reach 39 degrees today while southeastern Australia stays cool in the low 20s.

The mercury will just keep rising in Perth today with temperatures reaching a peak of 39 degrees. Some parts of the city should reach 40 degrees, the second time this season.

Meanwhile, Melbourne and Sydney will struggle to climb even into the low 20s under an abundance of cloud and for Sydney; very soggy summery conditions.

Such large temperature contrasts are to be expected across this Great Southern Land and summer is when we can see some of the largest differences. In this case a high in the Bight is playing a large part in these temperature differences. The high is directing hot, dry easterly winds across WA whilst simultaneously delivering cool, moist air to the southeast.

Temperatures in Perth will become milder over the next couple of days but still remaining above 30 degrees during the day. The chance of a shower or thunderstorm this evening and Wednesday afternoon brings a possibility of ending a 60 day run without rain.
