Sweltering conditions ahead for eastern Queensland

Kim Westcott, Wednesday October 22, 2014 - 16:02 AEDT

With plenty of sunshine on the way, Queenslanders will feel the heat begin to build as a hot airmass works its way east.

For Ipswich, Beuadesert, Gatton and Gayndah the start of the run of 30 degree days will commence on Thursday. By Saturday, the mercury will be hitting the mid 30's. The scorching conditions will linger until Tuesday.

About the coast, many locations including Rockhampton, Brisbane and Townsville will be basking in 30-degree heat on Saturday. For inland locations such as Longreach, Winton, Mount Isa and Boulia, Saturday will mark the beginning of a run of 40-degree days. From Monday, most of eastern QLD will be seeing the mercury rise into the mid-to-high 30's.

The heat is being caused by a long period of clear sunny days allowing heat to build in the west. Over the weekend and into next week, the high pressure ridge which keeps usually keeps coastal locations cooler due to the onshore winds will begin to break down. As a series of broad troughs develop, the winds will tend more northerly, dragging the heat into the east. These low pressure troughs also bring the risk of thunderstorms and showers, which may provide some temporary relief from the afternoon heat.

A change in the sweltering conditions for the southern and eastern parts of QLD is not expected until Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning when a cooler airmass from the south flushes the heat further north and the high pressure ridge rebuilds again.
