Sydney shake and bake ahead of a cool, thundery change

Sydney is on for a significant temperature change over the next 24 hours. But before that happens later tonight, Sydneysiders are baking under the spring sun. A total fire ban is in effect for the Greater Sydney Region as well as a strong wind warning for Sydney coastal waters.

Although overnight temperatures dropped briefly to 21 degrees as Sydneysiders were trick-or-treating at about 1am, the mercury quickly rose above 25 degrees by 2am as winds turned northwesterly. By 9am this morning, temperatures in the city were already nudging the 30 degree mark.

Hot, dry and gusty northerly winds have continued to charge over the Harbour City this morning leading to temperatures in the mid-to-high 30s and a very high fire danger. Wind gusts of up to 56 km/h have already been recorded at Sydney Airport and 67km/h at Penrith late this morning. Brief gusts to about 70-80km/h are likely throughout the afternoon, mainly about exposed areas of the coast and ranges.

Cloud will increase this afternoon ahead of a trough and front, bringing a good chance of gusty storms to the city. Thunderstorms have already started to flare up between Bowral and Oberon ahead of the change. This cool change is likely to move through the city early this evening, bringing some significant cooling as temperatures drop to about 15 degrees overnight.

Tomorrow it will be mostly sunny but southerly winds should keep temperatures in the low 20s across the city's east and the mid 20s over the western suburbs. Monday is likely to be slightly cooler before the city sees another round of gradual warming later next week.
