Sydney's sweltering summer continues

Graeme Brittain, Saturday January 14, 2017 - 12:03 AEDT

The Sydney Basin experienced exceptionally hot temperatures last night, with only a brief respite before the heat returns early next week.

The minimum temperatures last night were stiflingly hot. For Sydney Observatory Hill the temperature dropped to 26.7 degrees at 11pm, before warming up again to 30 degrees at 2am this morning. A similar trend in temperature was observed at Badgerys Creek and Bankstown. This increase in temperature overnight was a result of very hot air, built up over inland areas, being directed towards the coast, where a gusty sea breeze maintained fresher conditions during yesterday afternoon.

Cooler conditions in the wake of a low pressure trough will provide welcome relief Sunday and Monday, however the heat will return with a vengeance moving into next week. Daytime maximum temperatures comfortably in the low-mid 30's across the Sydney Basin on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the mercury expected to push above the the 40 degree mark again on Tuesday afternoon in some west suburbs. Low intensity heatwave conditions are forecast for Sydney during the early part of next week.

Be prepared for some more hot weather to come.
