Tasmanian temperatures plummet as wind slowly abates

Tasmania has borne the brunt of powerful winds this week with the coldest winds spreading across the state today.

Across the working week Tasmania has been hit hard by powerful winds that have felled trees and powerlines, leaving over 10 000 homes without power. Winds reached as high as 180km/h at Maatsuyker Island and up to 107km/h at Launceston and Devonport Airports.

In Hobart, wind gusts reached 93km/h on Wednesday, whilst it was 15 degrees. However, today winds have generally been much lighter with the mercury hovering around five degrees as the showers move through. There is a low chance that snow will fall in elevated western suburbs of Hobart.

Snow has been falling across the Tasmanian highlands this morning, with a deep covering in Waratah and slushy snow in Fern Tree. As the day continues snow is likely to fall as low as 200 metres.

From tomorrow, Tasmania will get significant relief from the wild and windy working week. There will only be a few showers, mostly along the southern and western coastlines. By Sunday winds will be generally light over inland areas and moderate on the west coast, with just a few showers.

It looks like it will be a long time until Tasmania has a windier week.
