Tasmania's sodden start to summer

Hobart is having its wettest start to December in 76 years after days of heavy rain in Tasmania.

Many locations in central and southeastern Tasmania have already exceeded their December monthly average rainfall totals during the first few days of the month.

Fingal's 86.2mm as of 9am today is more 160 per cent of its long-term December average.

Hobart (92mm) and Launceston (72mm) have also received more than one and a half times their December averages so far this month.

This is already Hobart's wettest December in 22 years and the wettest calendar month since September 2016. It's also Hobart's second wettest start to summer on record, beaten only by 111mm during the first five days of December in 1941.

A southward moving low pressure system may cause more rain in across the eastern half of Tasmania during the middle of this week, although there is some uncertainty regarding how much is expected to fall.

Hobartâ??' wettest December on record was 206.4mm in 1985 and the wettest calendar month was 255.4mm in March 1946.
