Thunderstorms about to fire in QLD

Rob Sharpe, Thursday August 11, 2016 - 12:27 AEST

Storm chasers in southern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales are getting excited for rare winter thunderstorms this afternoon.

Rain and cloud is slowly moving east along a low pressure trough, with unseasonably warm air ahead of it. The combination of the warmth and the moist air along the moving trough provides ripe conditions for thunderstorms.

Thunderstorms will start kicking off in the early afternoon, moving towards the coast. These storms have the potential to be severe, with damaging winds the most likely feature. Thunderstorms are likely to continue to affect QLD into the evening, possibly as far north as Rockhampton.

Brisbane is in with a good chance of seeing thunderstorms as well as the rainband, most likely in the late afternoon and early evening.

It will be at least another week until we see another big thunderstorm day in this area, but as we step into spring, storm season is set to erupt.
