Thunderstorms tear through Inverell

Inverell was smashed with an intense storm early yesterday evening with conditions set to ease later this week.

The Inverell Research Centre recorded 70mm to 9am today, the highest total since January 2013. Elsewhere in the city saw 85mm.

The most impressive portion of the storm occurred around 6pm, where over 30mm of rain fell in just ten minutes. This deluge was preceded by a spectacular display of lightning, with over 600 strikes illuminating the skies.

Several home-owners were forced to call the State Emergency Service with reports of flooding and leaky roofs.

This storm was triggered by moist onshore winds feeding into an inland trough. Enhancing this storm was an additional upper trough, also drawing moisture. With the atmosphere nearly saturated, a line of storms sparked off just to the west of Inverell and steam-rolled directly for the city before continuing to progress eastward, easing before hitting Grafton.

Conditions are looking much better for Inverell over the next few days. Tomorrow, skies should remain clear, allowing heat to build into a mostly sunny weekend.
