Touch of frost for Tasmania

Tasmania shivered to a cold September morning as frost affected northern and eastern parts of the state.

Liawenee dropped to -8.1 just before dawn this morning recording its second coldest morning of the year. Elsewhere, Mount Wellington (-4) Ross (-4) and Campania (1) experienced temperatures 4 to 8 degrees below average and their coldest morning for the month.

The freezing temperatures created frost in the Central North, Central Plateau, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley, North East, South East and North West Coast districts. A Frost Warning and Road Weather Alert cautioned early morning commuters of the icy roads as frost didn't thaw out until after 7am in some places.

A high pressure system in the wake of the weekend's front created clear skies and light winds which combined with a cold airmass to bring one of the coldest mornings of the year and a frosty start.

For Tasmania today, cloud will increase throughout the day reaching the mid teens ahead of a low pressure system and associated trough. Tomorrow this system will bring showers, heaviest in the north, preventing a cold morning but only warming daytime temperatures to the mid teens.
