Tropical soaking looms

Ben Domensino, Friday February 3, 2017 - 16:04 AEDT

The monsoon trough has returned to northern Australia ahead of a wet weekend in Darwin.

Squally rain and thunderstorms have returned to the northern tropics and will increase as the trough drifts further south in coming days.

The heaviest falls will occur east of Broome, across the Top End and over Queensland's North Tropical Coast and Peninsula on Saturday. These conditions will spread south and west on Sunday as the monsoon drifts further over Australia.

Darwin should receive 20-50mm of rain this weekend, possibly more if thunderstorms pass directly over the city.

Monsoonal rain and storms will continue across northern Australia through next week. Some forecast models suggest that a tropical low could move over waters north of Western Australia's Pilbara around Tuesday or Wednesday. This system could be the next to watch for tropical cyclone development in Australian waters.
