VIC missing out on June's rain

The start of winter was a dry one for much of Victoria.

Some of the driest places in the state were Yanakie an Yarran which saw 16mm and 19mm respectively for the month. Eildon had its driest June since records began 17 years ago, recording 22mm.

For Melbourne and surrounds, June rain was also severely lacking. Most suburbs saw around 25-50mm, which translates to 40-70% of the monthly average. For nearly two weeks, Melbourne hasn't seen a drop of rain. At Tullamarine, it was the driest June since records began 18 years ago, only seeing 23mm.

Only two locations recorded over 100mm for the month in VIC. Mount William in the Grampians saw 114mm fall over 23 days and Mount Moornapa had 110mm falling over 16 days.

For a majority of June, a belt of high pressure has been near-stationary over the state, effectively blocking a lot of the rain-bearing systems.

During July, rain is likely to reach median levels statewide but the chance of additional rain to make up the June deficit is low, particularity for southern and central districts. For the northwestern part of the state, the chance of receiving above median rain is higher.
