Vigorous cold front roars through the southeast

Drew Casper-Richardson, Sunday July 26, 2015 - 10:03 AEST

A vigorous cold front has brought damaging wind gusts, showers and snow to the southeast.

Tasmania felt the brunt of the wind with the usual exposed spots gusting well over 100km/h. Maatsukyer Island had a whopping gust of 143km/h at 8am on Sunday. Elsewhere Cape Grim recorded a gust of 124km/h, Low Rocky Point 122km/h and Scotts Peak Dam 120 km/h. Winds have been building in Hobart on Sunday morning with a 78km/h gust recorded so far. Strong, gusty winds will continue throughout Sunday for the Apple Isle with more 100km/h gusts on the way.

The cold front has also brought a burst of showers. The top fall to 9am Sunday was at Pine Tree Rivulet where 39mm reached the gauge. In western parts of the state there were widespread falls of 10-20mm with those in the east generally picking up less than 10mm. As the airmass continues to cool on Sunday and Monday showers will fall as snow to around 500m.

Across Bass Strait to Victoria winds weren't quite as strong though gusts still exceeded 100km/h at places such as Hogan Island and Wilsons Promontory. There were widespread falls of up to 5mm throughout the state while parts of the coast and the ranges picked up 10-20mm. Apollo Bay had one of the heavier falls with 23mm recorded.

Snow lovers will be happy to hear that up to 15cm of fresh snow was recorded at the snow resorts on Sunday morning. There is more on the way as well with another 15-20cm likely throughout Sunday with snow showers continuing until Tuesday.

The cold front responsible for the wintery blast will reach Sydney during Sunday afternoon and although Sydneysiders will notice the windier conditions it won't be anything like those in more southern states have experienced.
