Warm June across Australia

James Casey, Tuesday June 30, 2015 - 18:10 AEST

Sunny skies have created a warmer than average June across all capital cities.

The average daytime temperature in Perth this June was the warmest in over 100 years of records, reaching 21 degrees. The previous warmest June was in 1983 when the average was 20.6 degrees.

Elsewhere around the country warmer than average conditions prevailed with Adelaide, 16.16 degrees, and Brisbane, 17.05 degrees, edging over the long term average by less than a quarter of a degree. For the other capitals Melbourne, 11.08 degrees, Hobart, 9.14 degrees and Sydney, 18.61 degrees, were all about half a degree warmer than the long term June average.

Broad and stable high pressure systems created these warmer than average temperatures they dominated for much of the month. this continuous belt of high pressure brought sunny skies allowing heat to build. These highs also did a number on the cold fronts blocking them from bringing cooler air over the nation.
