Week of wild weather and wind for WA

Kim Westcott, Friday June 17, 2016 - 15:59 AEST

Several weather system are set to move over Western Australia this week; bringing a mix of sun, cloud, wind and lots of rain.

A cold front will approach the southwest during the early hours of Sunday morning, with wet and windy conditions likely throughout the southwest corner. The main system will slip to the south of WA, but will brush the southern coasts during Monday, allowing showers to ease around the southwest. However, gusty showers will continue throughout much of Monday for the southern coastal areas.

Just as one system leaves, another will arrive. This time, a low and trough from tropics will approach western areas of the state during Monday afternoon. Unlike the front that moved through on Sunday, this one contains abundant moisture and thick cloud. Its slow-moving nature will mean that heavy rain will develop around the Gascoyne coast, with some areas picking up 50mm during Tuesday.

By Wednesday, this system will have weakened significantly and heavy rain will be patchier. A cold front will catch the tail end of the trough, helping it move a quicker across the state, whilst sending cold and gusty winds along the southern coastline.

The winds will begin to ease by Thursday in the south as a high pressure system pushes in. The high will bring settled and sunny weather, although the air will have a distinct wintery bite to it as the plume of cold air lingers throughout the southern half of the state.

By this time next week, another trough carrying an abundance of tropical moisture will approach western areas. This should link up with yet another cold front, approaching the southwest on Saturday.

Over the course of week, the wettest areas will be between Exmouth to Geraldton, extending inland to Meekatharra, with weekly totals around 60-100mm. Along the southern fringe, falls look to be in the 30-60mm range, higher in exposed areas in the southwest corner. In the Perth area, weekly falls look to bring around 20-40mm.
