West coast to be whipped by wintry winds

Despite the widespread media focus on the wet and windy weather in eastern Australia, residents of Western Australia should also be on the lookout for wild winter weather this weekend.
The next couple of days will be fairly calm over the southwest corner of WA, although further north and east a blanket of cloud is bringing rain to the interior. The capital, Perth, will hit 18 degrees today and tomorrow, which is bang-on average for July.
A deep frontal system will approach later on Thursday, causing cloud and showers to increase. In Perth, winds will switch from northwesterly to westerly during the early hours of Friday morning, with the potential for 80km/h gusts. Parts of the Lower West should pick up around 20mm of rain in a day.
But this won't be the last of it. A second front will cross the southwest later on Friday, bringing in even colder and stronger winds, even extending inland into the Gascoyne and Goldfields. Damaging winds gusts may also reach up the coast past Geraldton later on Saturday and into Sunday. This, combined with rough seas of waves between three-to-five metres, will make any coastal activities extremely dangerous.
As the winds tend southerly over the weekend, the southwest can also expect the mercury to stay below 15 degrees for most of the day and into the new week. This will be one weekend to get out the woollens, build up a fire, and drink tea on the lounge.
