Wet night ahead of Friday flood threat

Ben Domensino, Thursday January 19, 2017 - 15:00 AEDT

Rain and storms could bring flooding to parts of southern and southeast Australia during the next 24 hours.

A trough and complex low pressure system will move from South Australia to the Tasman Sea between now and Friday night, triggering wet, windy and potentially severe weather.

Storms are already developing over South Australia and will become widespread through the state this afternoon. A severe storm warning was issued at 2pm in northern and central areas for heavy rain and damaging winds. Rainfall will increase in central and eastern districts tonight, where falls of around 20mm are possible.

Patchy rain and storms will develop over western Victoria and southwest New South Wales this evening, before increasing and spreading east overnight.

Most districts of Victoria will receive falls of about 5-20mm during tonight and Friday morning, which would be the heaviest rain in two-to-four months in some areas. Storms may cause localised flash flooding during the morning, most likely in the north. Dry weather will return from the west during the morning, although gusty southwestlery winds will develop in the afternoon.

In New South Wales, showers and storms will move across southern and western areas on Friday morning, then remaining areas during the day. Severe thunderstorms are a high chance over the slopes and ranges, were there will be enough moisture and instability to cause heavy rain, damaging winds and large hail.

Rain will spread across Tasmania from Friday morning and clear most areas in the afternoon. Despite the brevity of this wet weather, parts of the east coast could receive 50-100mm during Friday morning as the low pressure system passes by. A severe weather warning for heavy rain and flash flooding has been issued for the upper east coast and adjacent inland, between Eddystone Point and Swansea.
