Wild and woolly weather across TAS

A blast of wintry weather with strong winds and heavy rain has hit Tasmania with tremendous force.

Heavy rain peppered parts of the Western district in the 24 hours to 9 am this morning, with Narcissus River recording 70mm , Cradle Valley 58mm and Lake St Clair 54mm. Heavy rainfall will also persist into Thursday, with a severe weather warning current for the North West Coast, Central North, North East and Central Plateau for Thursday.

But the rain wasn't the only feature. Wild winds were clocked at 174km/h at Maatsukyer Island yesterday evening, making it the strongest wind gust since 2011. Another strong blast of wind saw gusts reach 167km/h in the early hours of this morning on Maatsukyer Island. It was a similar story at Mount Wellington, recording a gust to 152km/h last night and the strongest gust since February and another gust of 150km/h before sunrise.

A warning is in place for damaging wind gusts across the state for tonight into Thursday, with localised gusts expected to 110km/h.

The gusty westerlies and constant line-up of cold fronts is bringing the wind and rain to the Apple Isle, with more gusty winds and heavy rain expected throughout next week.
