Wild end to stormy spring week

Ben Domensino, Monday November 14, 2016 - 16:36 AEDT

Violent thunderstorms erupted over multiple states and territories during the last three days, capping off a big week of intense spring storms across Australia.

Thunderstorms were a daily feature last week as late-spring heat helped fuel unstable conditions across the country.

South Australia was hit by storms on Friday, causing large hail and damaging winds in the Adelaide area. Destructive winds caused gusts to 130km/h at Lameroo, before similar winds removed roofs from houses across the border in Mildura during the evening.

As the storms spread further north and east during the weekend, wind hail and wind ravished New South Wales and Queensland. Wind gusts reached close to 130km/h at Narrabri on Saturday and 160km/h at Brisbane Airport on Sunday.

Calmer conditions have returned to southern and eastern Australia today as the system responsible for the recent storms moves offshore.
