Windy week on the way to southern Australia

It's going to be a wild week in Tasmania, Victoria and southern parts of South Australia due to monster lows in the Southern Ocean.

Southern Australia has enjoyed a break from the windy winter weather, but now it's coming again. A series of powerful low pressure systems will dance their way east across the southern Ocean whilst directing ferocious fronts across the south of Australia.

Monday will be the calmest day of the working week in SA, VIC and TAS as northwesterly winds start to increase ahead of the first front. On Tuesday, this front will only glance coastal SA as it impacts VIC and lashes TAS with strong winds. Gusts should reach up to 80km/h in SA, around 90km/h in VIC, as parts of TAS will see gusts nearing 100km/h. Melbourne and Hobart are both likely to see gusts nearing 80km/h.

On Wednesday another low will sling a front across TAS with gusts nearing 90km/h in Hobart whilst the exposed Maatsuyker Island could clock 140km/h.

The mainland will then get its strongest burst for the week across Thursday and Friday as a low delivers two fronts up and over the southeast, bringing some of the coldest and windiest conditions experienced this winter.

Damaging winds, with gusts over 90km/h, are a significant risk across VIC and southeastern SA. The alpine region is facing likely blizzards with gusts at the peaks above 120km/h. Southern NSW is also a good chance to see the damaging winds experienced further south.

Behind the fronts the powerful winds will quickly vanish under a high pressure system that looks like bringing some of the coldest nights of the year to southern Australia.
