Winter-like days in Brisbane almost over

Thick cloud, showers and southerly winds are bringing temperatures similar to what would be expected in June and July for Brisbane and surrounds.

Yesterday, people in Brisbane felt their coldest February day since 1989, with the mercury only reaching 21.7 degrees, a whopping 8 degrees colder than average. Saturday is not faring much better, and will be lucky to surpass Friday's cool maximum. No records will be broken, however, as the lowest February maximum of 20.7 degrees set in 1906 has already been passed today.

The unseasonably cold temperatures are the result of a combination of factors, those being high jetstream cloud above lower nimbostratus cloud combining to limit heating from the sun and deliver showers instead, and a southerly wind flow bringing cooler air to the region.

The mercury will rise again tomorrow, leaving the winter-like daytime temperatures behind. A high pressure ridge over eastern Queensland will direct south-southeasterly winds towards Brisbane until late next week, so although it will be much warmer over the coming days than it is now, it will likely stay a degree or two below average until about Friday.
