Wintery relief for QLD

Tristan Meyers, Friday May 27, 2016 - 12:57 AEST

A southwesterly change will finally bring cooling to parts of QLD.

It's been unusually warm this May in Queensland. Take Rockhampton - it's already warmed to over 32 degrees today, the warmest its been this close to winter in over 50 years. Further inland, Emeraldā??s top of 31 degrees hasnā??t been seen this late in the season since 2003.

For Proserpine, this is the warmest May day in 14 years, while Holmes Reef is currently in the midst of the hottest May day in 11 years.

Although the change is due around the Capricornia region in the evening, some dry cooling is already being felt in the Central Highlands and Coalfields and further south.

Although tomorrow will be cooler overall, what will be most noticeable is the change in overnight temperatures. This steep drop will come during Saturday or Sunday evening, as a high pressure ridge begins to take hold and southwesterly winds gradually ease. Many locations, including Bowen, St George and Goondiwindi will have their coldest mornings since last winter. Conditions in the southeast will be even chillier on Monday morning, where there is a significant risk of frost around the Stanthorpe area.

This wintery-like drop may be a shock for some, but it won't last too long; a moisture-laden trough is looking to generate cloud, building about mid-way through next week, leading to milder nights. Thankfully, daytime temperatures will lack the steamy intensity of today.
