Wintry week coming to an end

Ben Domensino, Thursday October 13, 2016 - 12:17 AEDT

Tasmania and Victoria will have a chance to thaw out tomorrow after shivering through a bitterly cold start to the week.

A pair of cold fronts during the last four days have kept the mercury suppressed across both states.

In Melbourne, maximum temperatures have remained three-to-five degrees below average since Monday, making it the the city's coldest four-day October spell in two years.

To make matters worse, fresh southerly winds made it feel below 12 degrees in the city all day yesterday, causing Melbournians to question if theirs is still the world's most livable city.

Tasmania is more exposed to the cold air traveling up from Antarctica this week, allowing snow to settle on many highland areas on Monday. Hobart experienced its coldest day since July yesterday, topping out at just 11.1 degrees.

Snow is still sitting on top of nearby Mount Wellington, where the temperature stayed below zero degrees all day yesterday and most of this morning.

After four frigid days, those living in Tasmania and Victoria will be happy to know some warmer weather is about to arrive.

Northerly winds developing from Friday will push the mercury above average first the first time since last weekend in both Melbourne and Hobart. Saturday will be the warmest day before the next front arrives on Sunday, cooling things down again for the start of next week.
