Is an ANZAC Day Break heading for the southeast?
Many farms and gardens across southeastern Australia have had an incredibly dry start to the year, building on dry conditions that returned in 2024. There are some parts near the east coast that have done very well so far, and the majority of Queensland has seen well above average rain - some by more than three times the average.

Cyclone Errol is heading towards the northwest coast, and should make landfall over Easter.The rain from this one isn't heading to Queensland like we saw last time, that produced huge areas of flooding, that is still evident today with six catchments in Major Flood. Instead, this one is heading south.

The southwest has soaking rain - and there are signs the southeast may have some rain on the horizon
An active system is bringing soaking rain to parts of southwestern Australia, with some falls nearing 50mm, and a local fall of more than 100mm in Munglinup West. In comparison, a weak system is sliding across southeastern Australia, and while much of Tasmania picked up 3-15mm, it barely grazed the mainland, with falls of less than 1mm at the coast.

If you’re dry sowing or trying to work out what the year will bring, you don’t want to miss this update. Rain is the big decider of a season, and we know that in order for it to rain you have to have moisture and instability work together. We know plenty about the moisture part (and in good news, we have buckets of it ready at our disposal), but the instability part is the harder thing to forecast.
